Our Newest Team Member - Nikki's Starbright Experience

So there I was, freshly graduated from The University of Florida, in the middle of a pandemic! I had moved to NYC in January to complete an internship at a floral shop in SoHo. I abruptly went home in March, I’m sure we all remember the era of toilet paper shortages and insane lines at TJ’s.

Thinking that I’d be home for 2 weeks tops, I ended up there for 5 months. (Yes, I was still paying NYC rent while in Florida.) On return to The Big Apple, I needed a job, clearly.

I began calling florists all over New York, hoping for work as a floral designer. Times are “challenging” and most small businesses were not hiring. So, I sent my resume over to a couple of florists “in case anything comes up.”

The next day I heard back from Nic, of Starbright Floral Design:
“Are you at all interested in possibly doing some social media work p/t?”

“Why yes, yes I am interested!”

So, I did some research on the Starbright website, and the first thing I noticed was the extensive list of floral options. Every color palette you can imagine; specific high-end blooms like callas, orchids, peonies; and a huge catalogue of vases. I sincerely doubted their ability to have this much variety in stock and effectively move product. Flowers are extremely perishable, and most (profitable) shops strategically design their available floral products to efficiently move through stock.

On my first visit to Starbright’s shop in Chelsea, Manhattan; I got a tour of the flower cooler and was quickly shown that they did, in fact, have all of the flowers in stock. And more! The space is gigantic, more like a warehouse than a “flower shop.” All of the flower shops I had worked in up until this point were Mom and Pop florists or boutiques, and this was truly large-scale.

Not only is the design studio impressive, there is secret basement, tucked away from the eye of the public. This is where the one-of-a-kind marketing team that no other flower shop in the WORLD  can compare to. I spend my time running up and down the stairs, playing the role of liaison between the floral designers and marketing team.

I’ve been with Starbright Floral Design for 6 months now. It’s a family owned, diverse team that encourages me to shoot for the moon! I am empowered to make my own decisions and write my own job description. When people ask me what I “do” it is quite hard for me to explain in a single title. I manage social media, I design new products, I go on photoshoots, I host workshops, I graphic design for our website, I go on site for events, and much more!

Every day that I come into the studio I have a new challenge and discover a new way to interact with flowers that I had never imagined was possible. I thought that I’d be standing at a design table, throwing vases together and going on site creating beautiful pieces to other people’s expectations for the rest of my life. Instead, I am building my own personal philosophy, exploring my relationship with my creative process, and learning something new every day.
